Introduction to Adobe Illustrator
3 Thursdays: February 4, 11, and 18, 6-9pm
Learn all the basics you need to begin designing vector graphics with Illustrator. You will receive a thorough overview of this powerful and elegant software through a mixture of instructional demos and teacher-assisted lab time. By the end of the course you will have used found graphics, traced shapes, and custom typography to develop a rough layout into a completed design.

Secret Belgian Binding
Saturday, February 27, 10am-3pm
Do you want to know the secret to this unique binding? Rumored to be developed in Belgium in between the 14th and 16th centuries, the secret to this very unique binding style was lost until it was recently resurrected by Hedi Kyle. Don’t miss out on this opportunity for a new way to make a flexible hardcover book! It is perfect for any books that you want to lay flat, like journals or sketch books. Students should have a strong understanding of basic bookbinding skills for this class (covering boards, punching covers and text, etc.). A detailed supply list will be provided upon enrollment.

Introduction to Bookmaking
Saturday, January 9, 10am-4pm
Have you ever wanted to learn how to make your own journals, notebooks, photo albums, or scrapbooks but don’t know where to start? In this one-day workshop, students will gain a basic understanding of the materials and equipment commonly used in bookbinding. Students will learn three different book structures, including pamphlet, accordian, and japanese stab binding. We will also discuss how we can take our newly learned bookbinding skills and change the size and shape of a book to suit our personal design needs and style.

Introduction to Papermaking
Saturday, January 16, 10am-4pm
This class will cover western papermaking with cotton and abaca. Students will learn to use our Hollander beater, how to form sheets of paper and how to color pulp with aqueous pigments. Instructor will then demonstrate artistic techniques such as how to incorporate collage, inclusions and pulp painting into handmade paper.

Sewing with Hand Printed Fabric
3 Tuesdays: March 2, 9, and 16, 6pm-9pm
Learn to create hand printed fabric patterns and sew a tote bag using your unique fabric. The first part of this workshop will cover the basics of block printing on fabric, including introduction to the materials used, carving a block, and printing. During the second part we will use our newly printed fabric to sew a tote bag. No previous experience with printmaking necessary, some experience with a sewing machine is required (including the ability to thread a machine and sew a straight line).

Introduction to Block Printing on Fabric
Saturday, February 6, 10am-4:30pm
Learn to print and design your own fabric for clothing, furniture, and other decorating purposes. This workshop will cover the basics of creating a design, introduction to the materials used, carving a block, and printing. Participants are encouraged to bring drawings or copies of images they would like to use. No previous experience with printmaking necessary.

Make Your Own Valentines
2 Thursdays: February 4 and 11, 6pm-9pm
Curious about papermaking and letterpress printing? Try both as you produce unique love notes for Valentine’s Day! During the first session you’ll pull sheets of handmade paper, and during the second, you’ll use metal type to print your own message on them. Then give to friends, family, or a special someone!

Letterpressed Wedding Invitations
2 Saturdays, Jan 9 and 23, 10am-4pm plus one 4-hour individual appointment completed by March 5
Thinking of making your own invitations or save-the-date cards for a wedding or commitment ceremony? During two group sessions, work with a graphic designer and a printer to develop your design, get feedback on presentation and paper, prepare your design for production, and learn how to print photopolymer plates on a Vandercook press. Finally, enjoy individualized attention as you print your invitations during a one- on-one session. Elaborate designs may require extra sessions (not included).

Tuition: $410 per individual or $460 per couple, plus the cost of a polymer plate and your own paper
Letterpress for Graphic Designers
Saturday January 16, 10am-4pm plus one 4-hour individual appointment completed by March 5
Graphic designers: Learn how to use photopolymer technology to print your own designs with letterpress! A one-day small group session covers the basics of designing for photopolymer and operating a Vandercook press. Then enjoy individualized attention as you print with a photopolymer plate of your own design during a one-on-one session.
